Tarzan may be very easy to recognize, but the character itself has been around a lot longer than many of us imagine. Tarzan was created by Edgar Rice Burroughs in 1923 and appeared in twenty-three sequels as well as countless cultural references. This character makes a great Halloween costume and is relatively easy to put together. Remember that Tarzan is immortal, so you can dress as a young Tarzan no matter what the year.

Tarzan for the most part has a very simple costume. It just depends on how you would like it to look. You can have the full Tarzan costume of loincloth that also covers the chest with one shoulder strap or you can have the loin cloth and leave the rest of you bare. In most of the later movies Tarzan is seen with less clothing than the full loin cloth of the original movies, so it is up to you how much you would like to spend.

Jane Porter was Tarzan’s companion who eventually married him. Tarzan was a child born to parents who were marooned on an island and had died. The infant was adopted by a family of apes and is trained to live like an ape, unaware that he is human. When Tarzan is found by the English noble family he is a part of, he meets Jane. Upon spending more time with Tarzan, he teaches her his ways and she becomes capable of defending herself and surviving in the wild.

For Jane, there is a sexy loincloth outfit in which there is a skirt and top cut provocatively or you can choose her English style clothing. There are several versions of the Jane costume to choose from. Most include an animal print dress. To make your costume more “Janey” grab a club for shooing natural enemies of the apes to compliment your costume and a cavewoman necklace made of fake, plastic animal teeth.

Complete the Tarzan and Jane costume with accessories like trinkets, bone jewelry, clubs, and ankle bracelets. Jane can add a piece of flower lei as well. Dressing up in an ape costume will vary depending on what type of ape you wish to be. You have gorilla suits providing an overly large body.

There are also smaller ape costumes. They all have the one thing in common. They are jumpsuits of a plush material, in which the chest is typically muscled, and the hood fits over the head using the person’s face as the ape face. Most ape jumpsuits come with feet and hands. Do not forget your banana as that is a popular ape food!

To dress as a monkey go as a cute and cuddly creature or perhaps a little scary like the apes. There are several sizes to the monkey costumes, but most of the cute ones are in the infant to child range. You can be a full faced monkey or use your own face with a hood and ears to complete the look. Monkey’s have long tails so your costume should be complete with a tail as well. You can get the full face mask or a full suit depending on your budget. Monkeys tend to be color brown, or white and black so you could dress in appropriate clothing and just have the mask.
